If blog software had its way, eight would be the new 13; one trending fail WTPWB has been noticing lately is the inadvertent smiley in numbered lists, where the 8 should be. Take, for example, this list of “types of bitches,” found here.

This: is an emoticon, you see, depicting a smiling face with some sort of glasses on. I guess this is as good a time as any to see if THIS blog will make the same mistake.

UPDATE: So umm anyone know how to turn that off?

Now I’d like to perform a song for you all:

We’re still stuck in the sixties… blahbity blah blah blah blaaaah

Look, I’m as big a fan of asshole comedy as probably anyone, but who the fuck does Gallagher think he is, turning his nose up at being named 100th best comedian ever by Comedy Central (and then claming hes “never heard” of most of the people on the list, all during a play to become “relevant” again)?

Someone with a “great sense of humor,” apparently.

Thanks to cable and drugs, I’ve seen a good chunk of the Gallagher library, and yeah, I guess its a little humorous to watch a guy tell average jokes while the audience waits for him to get on with it already and smash some fucking fresh fruit. But like all shtick, it wears thin pretty fast. The hokey generational humor, the hippie-dippie drug jokes, relationship wiseguy’in … nothing this guy did, aside from the watermelon bit, of course, was even a little bit original. Yet he runs around as if hes the lord’s gift to the laugh, making an enemy of “mediocrity” and those who supposedly seek it — knowing full well that’s the precise demographic that made the fucker rich:

Q: How did it feel when you received the news that you were the 100th best stand-up according to Comedy Central?

A: It stunk. I looked at the other people and I was trying to find anyone I ever heard of. How could I be behind people I never heard of? How many of these people stayed in the business for 20 years? I made 13 one-hour shows for Showtime, which are available on videotape. I invented the one-man show on cable.

I don’t want to go on a rant here, but, Jesus, Gallagher, the only reason you’re on any list in the first place is because you’re so fucking old, and you did something that people remember, mostly because in order to get within sixty feet of you, your audience had to cover itself with a plastic goddamned tarp.

Ahem. Pardon. Anyway, I started this post because I was going to point you to the douchebaggy interview Gallagher did with David Wolinsky at The Onion, but I just realized how irrelevant the guy is, and how he’s maybe the only comedian on the planet that renders himself less relevant by working harder.

Obviously there is no media outlet that views itself as being part of ‘the media.’ This is problematic, especially when media outlets write pieces about how Sarah Palin is juicing the media cycle by hopping on issues at the height of their short-lived, American attention span induced popularity (remember when Dave Letterman had an affair, or something? me neither).

Every editorial news outlet seem to conveniently omit themselves from the ‘media’ that is irresponsibly perpetuating her nonsense, thus creating the impression, even in the eyes of her most ardent skeptics, that Sarah Palin is important enough to counter. The cycle for responding to Palin seems to have taken a concrete form:

1. Read the new Palin op-ed/tweet/facebook note/book/etc.

2. Find the sections of the piece where her logical thought process and factual accuracy are at their worst (this is probably the easiest part)

3. Bitch and whine about how her points are factually wrong (obviously), while explaining these fallicies to a group of elite literary folks, deemed such by their willingness to sit through an entire article, paragraph, or sentence. Clearly this is not the demographic that needs converting.

After coming out with her new op-ed this morning, Gawker, the Atlantic, Media Matters, and a host of others have spit out this same formulaic, predictable retort to her inane Bachman-esque psycho-babble.

The weird part is that these pieces tend to take on tones as petty and childlike as Palin’s original argument. It’s sort of like if a little kid calls you a phooey-head. Your two options are to either explain that they are the one that is a phooey-head, or walk away and ignore them, because they are a little kid. And while it should be shame on Marcus Broccoli and the Washington Post for publishing this in the first place, blame should also be thrown on all these media outlets for making people think that what Sarah Palin says is serious enough to be refuted.
