Road Head.

WNYC published some really excellent photos of the in-progress East Side Access Project, which will connect the Long Island Railroad to Grand Central terminal in Manhattan.

It takes a lot of complex machinery to bore a hole in the earth. Pictured left (also number 14 in the slideshow linked above) is the humorously named roadheader, which “has 290 picks, large drill bits, that burrow through the rock.”

Awllll-riiight.
